What is Math?

When people ask me about my major, I tell them that it is math. The most responses I got is that "I hate math." In their perspective, the hardest thing about math is calculating, adding, or multiplying numbers carefully to get the correct answer. However, to me, math is more than that. Math is all around us, in everything we do. Math is both an art and a science. Math is not only a system of skills used to do calculations or devise proofs, but also a discipline that seeks understanding of the patterns and structures of constructs of the human mind. To math people, when confronting any kinds of problem, they tend to think critically and be able to solve in many different ways. Therefore, this process helps practice and train their minds in a better way.

Math has a greatly astonishing background from ancient to the modern days. The top five discoveries in mathematics in my mind are:
  • The negative numbers
  • Prime numbers
  • Pythagorean Theorems
  • The value of Pi
  • Quadratic equations.

  1. Do you try to communicate to people your vision of math when they tell you they hate it? Do you get any positive response?

  2. Well, it really depends on whom I'm talking to. If they have been to school and have their interest in kind of related major, their perspective will not be that bad at all.
